Concerning darker themes/concepts

First off, I want to say AMAZING work so far. I cannot wait to get my hands on this game, and I can assure you I'll be trying to back the project as much as possible and also spread it as far as I can.

But I also wanted to ask... What sort of themes and ideas do you plan on dealing with in the game? Will you be dealing with topics such as bigotry, sexism, loss of innocence, political intrigue, etc? Or just fantastical conflicts?

Regardless of whether or not you'll be dealing with said themes in Sui Generis, I'll definitely be supporting the project as much as I can!

Thanks,
Barn

Hi guys. Thanks for your posts. If it helps at all I can say Jack Vance and Gene Wolfe are big inspirations to us in terms of writing and style. Book of the New Sun and Tales of the Dying Earth specifically are a massive influence, we all love those books and if you've ever read them you might have a feel for the sorts of characters you'll be running into. We want our world to be full of moral ambiguity and the characters within it to have complex and plausible motivations.

Moral ambiguity? Characters with realistic motivations? Lovely!

Also, I just wanted to say that I really like the idea of having the game's world and plot to advance continuously, with or without the player's involvement. I know some people don't really like the idea, but I hope you stick with that design choice. :)

I really enjoy the idea of running into diverse, varied people. If you can go about creating the inhabitants of your world with the intention to teach one more about oneself through symbols and the use of the perspective -- I will be so, so very appreciative of this when it's released. Continue with the realism as well, I don't mean to say I'd like to have random, explodingly spontaneous environments. Realistically, people are varied depending on their surroundings, so as long as you set up a system that blends, flows, and organizes the settings within the world together well, I think the game will be more than set to do well. As mentioned earlier in this thread, an overlying theme may help, but too overlying of a theme will only dull the entire world over. I would suggest using a theme like breaking free from tyranny, or seeing through a massive, deceptive plot; a theme that is presently relevant, that can be regularly touched upon, that isn't too insisting.

Characters that have vague, yet depressive & pessimistic flavour on them would suit greatly Sui Generis i think of personally. To be honest, i got sick of seeing games that always pleases players the way they wanted to be in the end, not that Sui Generis' fate would be that kind, in fact mostly opposed. I don't think so we gonna see the world as "cakes and ale" of corpse. Sarcasm, envy, gluttony, hatred, abuses etc every kind of filth and pleasures just like in real world we are dealing. It would be the best option maybe to see varied personalities that are to be given and shared on npcs throughout the game that would catch & surprise us abruptly.

I'd never say no to absurdity, morbidity, or any extreme feeling when used on the spot.

Just that one line got me stoked! I always found that to be the most powerful (or influential) aspect of playing through a game. If I can be ambivalent about my choices then the game loses all its realism.

Gene Wolfe is amazing, hopefully will see a blade called the Terminus Est in this game, haha!
