System Requirements

I am really impressed about the amount and quality of work that your team have made so far. There's only one thing that's worrying me. I am a little concerned about system requirements. Dynamic lighting, advanced physics, environmental effects, dynamically created open world with many interactions. This will require some compute power.

I know it's too early to announce system requirements but what class of Pc's are you having in mind developing this game?

What about laptops and possible problems with controllers like touchpad?

Will it work on older computers (direct 9.0c/OpenGL 3 graphic cards)?

Will there be an option to turn off dynamic lighting, environmental effects, etc.?

Is your engine OpenGL based?

How do you want to support Linux platform? Are you thinking about native client or running through wine?

Talking about the system req is indeed way too early. Most of the time, optimization takes place during the final stages of development.

Hi,
Actually optimisation was a huge part of the development process and at the core of the engine design, not an afterthought. It's what makes much of what we are doing possible. We've also achieved better results than expected.

The engine is OpenGL based and hugely scalable. You need a reasonable graphics card, we don't expect it to run well on Intel integrateds or the lowest end cards, but it doesn't need to particularly recent. The CPU and ram requirements are also extremely moderate.

I will quote part of what I posted on Rock Paper Shotgun:

"The videos are recorded in real time on an off the shelf mid-range computer. To compensate for the video’s horrible 30 fps we have the engine render each frame 8 times for smoother motion (yes, in real time). This is a feature available also in game. The computer doesn’t have fast storage (just a regular HDD) so we have to compress the video in real time which is a huge load on the system. Bottom line, it’s fast, really fast. In the videos I personally play one character and the other is AI controlled, all in real time while recording the video at effectively 240 fps."

Our character physics and animation system are also very efficient and we can have plenty of characters on screen.

We want to support both Mac and Linux with native clients. With Mac this should be trivial, we have less direct experience with Linux so we're not being particularly official about it yet.

I don't see a touchpad as being the most suitable input method for much of our combat but perhaps someone who is used to it could fair well. Typically only small movements of the cursor are required. Perhaps something could be done to improve controls for such devices.

You continue to impress at every turn, Madoc. I commend you for having the vision and wherewithal to actively optimize as you built a brand new engine, few other small indie studios would think, or be able to do so as well as you have by yourself. Cheers!

Though I only use windows, and have for years, I want to encourage Linux support because for the future of PC gaming, it appears as though microsoft wants to close off the system and get their own app store, they want to run a system similar to that of apple where they get complete control. Thus, game developers need to start shifting to Linux now, the free open software. Hopefully with big developers like Valve announcing their switch to Linux, they can pressure the graphics card companies into developing drivers to finally fix the problems of Linux gaming.

Totally agrees with You Humblerbee, Windows is starting to lean more and more neglecting pc gaming and they would glady see it die of making people turn more to consoles, especially xbox, which they get a cut of the games sold to it.
My next computer once this one ready for burial is gonna be a Linux, even though my current computer should last another 2-4 years.

How about a demonstration of a bigger number of charecters in frame? Well at least in near future

I was so glad to read that you planned to support Linux plattform! This is just what Linux needs and I don't hesitated for a moment. I'm gonna donate!

It's already happening. Just a day or two ago nVidia released some drivers that really upped the performance. I'm running Archlinux exclusively now (I wiped my Windows parititions a couple of weeks ago) and the games that do run run much better than on Windows. With over 60,000 applications for the closed Steam beta for Linux, I think we are really gaining momentum.
Of course, the platform is a bit rough for development right now because it hasn't really been a huge target group for things like games until now, but I think we are getting there, and fast. And when we get there it is going to be a much better platform for development than Windows and MacOS, because of how open and unregulated it is.

It's the project of my dreams!! and I will play it in my computer!!! I can't believe it!! Take my money plz! :)
I'm sure they will take your money if you choose to donate via this site using Paypal or on Kickstarter ;)

Well, the Kickstarter total doesn't include the people who donate via Paypal. Also, Kickstarter donations seem to be getting more frequent since people are spreading the word and some articles about the game are being posted on various sites. I think the team also said they'll still make and release the game even if the Kickstarter goal isn't reached, but it will take much longer.

Will the Alpha and Beta material be available on Mac?

No worries, can't provide anything concrete on system requirements yet but they will be similar to other games in the genre.

In short to run it well you will need a half decent graphics card; something better than a low end/integrated laptop card, with age being less of a factor.

Cool.

Sui Generis is the thing that has finally convinced me to upgrade on my MacBook and come back to windows, so I want to make sure the PC I get can actually run the game lol
