So this is a weird one. In the Manage screen, whenever you put a new item (anything they didn't have prior to you hiring them) to your Merchant's Other Items box, equip it on them, and exit, you will find the item duplicated when you come back. Another way this bug works is when you equip an item on the Merchant, take out the item from the Other Items box, and put it back into the Arsenal, the item will still be visible on the character. Physically click-dragging that item from the Merchant's model will give you a duplicate of that item.
Now I've also found that if you sell a duplicated item, you will likely encounter this message in either of the vendor screens: http://www.baremettle.com/forums/index.php?threads/bug-failed-to-optain-user-item-4000000e.6352/
I'm not sure if you only get this message if you sell duplicated items, but the moment you get this message, any duplicated items still equipped on your characters or still in your Arsenal will disappear. You will keep getting this message until the 'bad' items are cycled out of the vendor's inventories. So if you play enough matches, this message will disappear.
