I like the addition because I enjoy writing and could always use practice. However, if my character dies, won't all the entries I've made be lost? Even if they aren't lost, it would be nice for the entries to be placed in a file in a non-compiled format, which I can backup or replace at a whim. Then they could also be shared.

Good question. By any means you should be fine once you reach the first checkpoint; by then even if your character dies you can sill continiue, so nothing should be lost.

Having it in a text file would be great.
Right now, I'm treating the journal like.. well: A journal. I am writing in it every now and then, roleplaying my clueless character.

Diablo 3 has a Graveyard which stores your dead characters. That could also be a way to save your journal entries.
