The world is harsh and while not everything will be out to kill, I would rather be able to discern such interest from the travelers I come across. So why not the ability to scout?
With the world view presented from the sky, all we are able to see is roughly what can be fit on screen. Zooming may enhance this scope but even that has it's limits. My suggestion is some sort of mechanic that allows a first-person view while your character's position is fixed. The most apparent solution is a pair of binoculars or some lens-contraption (depends on what fits in the world).
However, beyond the ability to view the land from a horizontal perspective, I haven't come up with many more uses for such a device. Perhaps simply to admire the landscape. We have such a beautiful sky box and the sun-rise/set looks such a sight to behold. Why waste these pleasures trying to adhere to strict isometric perspectives? Additionally, the device might be useful in scouting landmarks or, as I started the thread, getting a peak on other wanderers.
In short, I would love a much more down to earth view of the world.
Truly, the world being created here is too much to be confined to a box above our heads.
