I retract my magic-statement. after reading more about the tears of the afflicted, I've concluded it's a likely explanation.. All tough, I wonder why the sword apparently has encapsulated the balls in a hollow blade. To make the 3D-model simpler to create? Maybe the in-game explanation is that the sides of the blade is covered in a light alloy to hide the mechanic, and make it look heavier than it is.
