According to some devs it's fairly accurate, currently shows ~1500 owners (the numbers are from yesterday though).

And don't forget that current 'owners' number include all those activated steam keys from backer's accounts.

User reviews are mostly positive, but the game is not yet on Popular New Releases or Top Sales lists on steam main page. Probably need some time and, well, a few articles on various game sites will help a lot.

I found Exanima by browsing the early access games on Steam. It was near the top of the list. : )
