Wearing full chainmail under full plate armor. Realistic? Ineffective?

What is the sophistication level of armour in Exanima? Is it possible for them to still be at the intermediary state, with early plate armour but still putting mail underneath?

And armour is indeed broken for female characters in Exanima.
For male characters, it works correctly: the more armour, the more protection.
But for female characters, it works the wrong way: the more unprotected skin, the less protection! This is the opposite of what is shown in countless documents.

By the looks of it, no. Pretty much the whole body area is covered in plates. Here are two randomly picked examples (not 100% accurate, but to get the point across):

Earlier armor

Later armor

You can probably recognize which of these styles is closer to what we see in Exanima. The earlier armor had much larger gaps between the plate pieces, like around the shoulder, at the armpits, the inside of the arm etc. Also, same plate pieces needed the chain shirt to fit, like the shoulders, who were simply tied to the mail with leather straps. The more plate armor developed, the less need there was for excessive amounts of mail, which is why it was eventually abandoned.

No official statement on this. All they've said is that they take inspiration from medieval europe because it brings consistency to what level of technology they can put into the game- but late and early medieval europe was different in some ways like the one we're talking about now

I'm far from an expert, but the full plate armor in Exanima seems to be late 15th century. Although the style looks like a mix between the symmetry of gothic armor and the smoothness of italian white armor.

I have no idea what the newer set of plate armor is modeled after, it may be an original fantasy design.

While the extra layer of mail already does add a lot of encumbrance, it is not enough to simulate what would actually happen. Reaslistically speaking, that amount of mail would not just hinder you a bit more, it would stop the plate armor from functioning. (Full) plate armor only workes properly when it is tailored to the body, which the chain armor or overly thick padding prevents.

I´m not stomping my foot down claiming "It has to be done this way!", but I am confirming the OP in that his assumptions are correct and that there are logical reasons why advanced plate armor got rid of the mail underneath.
Then let's just make Full Plate suit occupy several layers at the same time, so the player can only wear a light gambeson/arming jaket underneath. Problemo Finito.

Pretty much, yes. Would also help with the micromanagement... "Oh, you want to know which stats your padded clothing has? Have fun removing multiple layers of armor first!"

There are some effigies depicting warriors who wore mail armour underneath plate armour.

It's a decent flexible armour that covers exposed areas like the armpits, and Exanima currently doesn't have mail voiders and gussets to cover those patches only. If such were available, it might be useful (though this is nit picking and a full mail shirt isn't the end of the world).
