Combat Dynamics: Enemies

It's been stated by the devs that combat will be relatively uncommon and very deadly. To enhance the tension and immersion factor of these moments I think that intelligent enemies with dynamic and reactive behaviors are a must. Another good immersion-buffing feature is fully voiced enemy commands, threats, and yells during combat, though there would have to be a massive amount of lines for them to use in order for it to remain effective as an immersive feature.
Can anybody give some insight into whether or not these kinds of things are planned or not? Thanks.

Orisoll, have you watched any of the videos with combat? If not I'd recommend doing so since they demonstrate that combat is very dynamic and reactive :) As far as having fully voiced enemy commands I'm not sure if they're doing such a thing. The devs haven't yet commented on this particular feature. The only statement I recall them making about voice-overs is that the main protagonist will not have every line of dialogue spoken. I believe they also said they were talking with some professional voice actors so I'd assume that some parts of the game would have voice-overs. I'm thinking this applies especially to things like attack sounds (you can hear grunting during combat in the current videos).

To be honest I think voice acting and that would ruin a game like this, As long as the gameplay is great which it is, I don't think there's much need for voice interaction.

Yeah, I've watched the videos. But I wasn't really referring to the actual physical dynamics, I was thinking more along the lines of enemies using the environment to their advantage (using a broom to block when unarmed and the like) and reactions to being hit like stumbling and clutching at wounds.
Those kinds of dynamics.

Wait... Really? I know voice acting's not mandatory but I hardly see its effects being detrimental to the game as a whole, but now you've got me interested. Could you explain exactly how it'd ruin the game?

I'm talking about full blown voice acting, between yourself and other people, if they do implement voice acting, it should be very rare that the same sentence happens near enough to each other. Walk round in GTA for 10 minutes, you'll hear pedestrians say the same things over again and again. Reading back on my post I didn't really explain what I meant, just don't want to walk round town hearing "Hey! Get off me" "Hey! Get off me" "Hey! Get off me".

I think something that Bare Mettle could do good is just like the lightening strike where the sound is loud/soft depending on distance, is a random event which starts by a women or mans scream, to which its your choice to go there or not. It's tricky because you have a absolute killer game here, which's combat system is completely sandboxed (in a way), its a sandbox game but you can't really have sandboxed voice(something new every time) I guess when I get the alpha version, it would be great for Bare Mettle to email the ones with the alpha access and ask them questions on it, which I'm hoping they already have this on their to do list.

To sum up, I'm not anti anything, if its done right, it will rock.

Agreed that full voice acting wouldn't work so well in SG. Full voice acting suits linear games much better because they have a pre-determined plot. That said, occasional spoken commands or responses, similar to Baldur's Gate would help add a dash of spice and character.

In voice acting it would be cool if different factions had different battle cries they'd shout going into battle, I'm thinking things along the lines of 'Hooyah!', 'Oolehk' and other similar sounding things that a player could become familiar with to recognize different factions by sound. Just a thought.

Accents help with that too... think Gimli.

As long as it is not like Skyrim where "SKYRIM IS A LAND FOR THE NORRRDDSSS" is screamed by Stormcloaks, Nords, humanoids, deer, bodies, rocks.

Take a game like Morrowind vs the current Elder Scrolls games. Eventhough the lines of dialouge you could ask were just about repeated over and over again you still had about fifty to sixty things you can ask an NPC about and get a text response back. Sure, everyone says the same thing to that question, but you could ask them about a town or random thing while in a game like Skyrim you can only communicate as far as voiced lines are there, you can't have a huge list of things to ask an NPC.
